Crosby Wins In Pensacola:

Seven Contestants Vie for Title of Mr. Roundup 2011

(Pensacola , Florida/July 16, 2011)     Michael Crosby straddles the saddle as Mr Roundup 2011

  "I wasn't expecting this!"

Michael Crosby repeated that phrase several times after capturing the title of Mr Roundup 2011 Saturday night, July 16, at The Roundup Bar in Pensacola. A jam-packed house and a stage filled with seven handsome contestants made this year's contest the best yet. The men on stage offered somethng for everyone- from buff to bear, with roots as close as Pensacola, and from as far away as Scotland. Levi and leather shared the stage. In the end, it was Michael Crosby, a native of of New Orleans and resident of Pensacola who charmed the Roundup's clients. Those at the bar served both as audience and judges. Michael warmed the crowd with his casual conversation and good looks. His leather harness certainly didin't hurt.

With the win, Michael plans to represent The Roundup in the 2011 Mr. Gulf Coast Bear Contest in Mobile July 30th, during Bleather Weekend.  The Roundup will provide hotel accomodations for his participation.

Runner-up? Wes Thompson, originally of Pittsburg, Kansas... who definately appealed to bear lovers in the crowd.

This year's event got off to a unique start, with each contestant making his first appearance only from the waist down... (thanks to an unusual half door constructed into the set.) After that, the guys were paraded out in their bar wear, followed by a "trick question" round on the bar's famous saddle... with the final competition being the "Less Is More" catagory. The competitors took that part of the show to heart- so much so that the bar had to provide a few stategically placed cowboy hats to keep a couple of them from being disqualified!

Sam Davis, Mr. Roundup 2010 and Mr  Southern Renegade 2010 was in charge of herding the contestants on and off the stage. Let's just say Sam had his hands full.

While Michael Crosby was chosen Mr Rounup 2011, all of the contestants are invited to be contestants in the Mr Southern Renegade Contest and the Mr. Gulf Coast Bear Contest, both being held during Bleather 2011 in Mobile, AL. Visit www.mobilebleatherweeeknd.com for details!

The Roundup, Bleather 2011, and the Southern Renegades sincerely thank Michael Crosby and his fellow contestants, and THE CROWD for making Mr Roundup 2011 a big success and a great night out for everyone!

Here's a Little Leather History Lesson

(Source: Wikepedia)

Gay male leather culture has existed since the late 1940s,[2] when it likely grew out of post-WWIIbiker culture. Early gay leather bars were subcultural versions of the motorcycle club. Pioneering gay motorcycle clubs included Satyr, established in Los Angeles in 1954; Oedipus, also established in Los Angeles, and the New York Motorbike Club. Early San Francisco clubs included the Warlocks and the California Motor Club.[3]

These clubs, like the motorcycle culture in general, reflected a disaffection with the mainstream culture of post-World War II America, a disaffection whose notoriety---and therefore appeal---expanded after the sensationalized news coverage of the Hollister "riot" of 1947. The 1953 film The Wild One starring Marlon Brando wearing jeans, a T-shirt, a leather jacket, and muir cap, played on pop-cultural fascination with the Hollister "riot" and promoted an image of masculine independence that resonated with some gay men in a culture which stereotyped gay men as effeminate. To that end, gay motorcycle culture also reflected some men's disaffection with the coexistent gay cultures more organized around passing, high culture, popular culture (especially musical theater), and/or camp.

Perhaps as a result, the leather community that emerged from the motorcycle clubs also became the practical and symbolic location for the gay men's open exploration
